The ‘Judgement of Solomon’ in art

Solomon’s judgement of the two prostitute-mothers became a popular subject in Christian art. Because Solomon was regarded as an Old Testament ‘type’ for Christ, the subject came to be associated with the Last Judgement at which Christ will preside as judge. It was also interpreted as an allegory for divine justice and wisdom, and as a symbol for Justice in a more general sense. Visually, the subject provided artists with a potentially dramatic scenario in which the tension was often heightened through the emotionally charged gestures of the two mothers (one pleading, the other accusing) and the dramatic pose of the executioner, who is frequently depicted holding a raised sword in one hand while from the other he dangles the living child he is about to cut in two. The dead child lies inanimate on the ground within this highly charged scene, while over it all presides the figure of Solomon, calmly delivering his judgement from the raised Throne of Justice.
